01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Set along the underground concourse of Ikebukuro Station, Sakura Sushi is a standing sushi bar where chefs shape each piece at a brisk, steady rhythm right before your eyes. Standing at the counter, the first thing to look for is the well-regarded tuna selection. With a 3-piece pacific bluefin sampler spanning lean akami, medium-fatty chutoro, and rich otoro on a single plate, alongside marinated zuke tuna infused with savory depth, you can compare the nuances of each cut without stretching your wallet.

The menu features an extensive array of nigiri and rolls ordered from 1 piece, including squids like spear squid, cuttlefish, and raw squid tentacles, as well as seasonal catches and silver-skinned fish such as gizzard shad and striped jack. Anchoring your order with a daily recommended 3-piece assortment or an economical daytime lunch set, then adding interesting toppings as the mood strikes, makes for a light, flexible meal.

With room for around 10 guests standing side by side, the compact counter turns over quickly, making it a handy spot when you want a quick solo bite between transit legs. Whether pairing a few pieces with draft beer or sake, or finishing warmly with a comforting bowl of asari clam or freshwater clam miso soup, it is an easy stop to suit whatever appetite and time you have on hand.
